The Freelance Life

Feb 13, 2008

What is the life of a freelancer?

Since I have decided to find a way to earn income without getting employed, I was able to enjoy the flexibility of not having a fixed work schedule.

I really like having to wake up in the late morning and sleep beyond the midnight hour. I also have the luxury to snooze in the middle of the day, if there are no projects to do.

I like not having a boss around to follow orders. I love not being able to type in reports at work.

Isn’t it great to have a life that you can truly call your own?

But this same freelance life can be as well difficult.

If there is no work, there is no income. Not having a project to work on for days or weeks at a time can be quite frustrating, because this means you get no money in return.

life of a freelancerSecuring a job can be difficult, at least for the new players in freelancing. You have to establish a reputation first.

As a freelance, having the skills are not simply enough to do the work. One must learn entrepreneurial skills to make an edge to the job.

And also learn to manage finances. Freelance jobs are not fixed guaranteed jobs in the first place.

Going freelance is a good option to have – it is actually well appreciated by many corporate employees who wish to shift to this kind of job. But consider the advantages and disadvantages of embarking on this career before you make the final shift.

I am currently contemplating of quitting my “day job” and switch to freelancing. I got hooked into oDesk since late last year and so far, income is quite good but ive been sleeping sless due to more working hours on top of the regular 40 hrs/ week.I am weighing my options and waiting for advantages to outweigh the disadvantages. You’re right when you said that embarking on this path needs a thorough thinking.

Thanks a lot! Take your time to decide.

For me, I am on to a full time freelance career. I have periods where I had too much work and periods that I had lesser work to do.

You know what? You inspire me, I am a CompSci grad, but honestly, when I was in college it wasn’t my passion, I didn’t enjoy it. But time goes by, internet blasted just like a bomb, and influence a lot of people just like me. Now, I am here in Canada as a live in caregiver, currently studying Internet Marketing and planning to take courses in web designing. I want to earn at home, being a free lancer, internet marketer, doing a job that I love without having “pakikisama” with the employer. Yes its true, you should have skills of an entrepreneur, because it is a business. But according to a book that I read, “walang yumayaman sa pagiging employee lang”. Thanks and God bless. :-)

Really? So it’s like you need to get back to CompSci again because of web designing. I’m sure these courses would be easier for you to learn. Good luck then, and thanks for letting me know.

Hi! I resigned from my job to be a stay-at-home mom last february. I am looking for freelance work that I can do at home while my baby is sleeping or resting. I am an architect/ interior designer by profession but I don’t mind doing other work just to keep me occupied. Would you recommend odesk for me? Thank you.
