How to Setup Yahoo Messenger to Send Updates to Plurk

Feb 25, 2009

UPDATE: PlurkYM isn’t working anymore because Plurk had enabled the service, in addition to Google Talk.

CarloReid had already made his own blog post packed with more commands to the PlurkYM bot. Check out his post about PlurkYM in his blog.

Plurk had not yet offered the capability to send status updates and microblogs through YM. Carlo Reid had suddenly thought of creating PlurkYM that makes it possible for users Yahoo Messenger to post status and microblog updates on Plurk. I caught him testing this and I got curious: he was trying to make PlurkYM work!

Yahoo Messenger cannot post updates to Plurk

From the screenshot above, Plurk can post updates using Google Talk, MSN and is now trying to add AIM to list. I was disappointed to see that Yahoo Messenger is not included.

PlurkYM is still in its testing stage. Please direct all comments, suggestions and bug reports to Carlo Reid through his blog.

Privacy

To make this work, the PlurkYM bot asks for the Plurk username and password during registration. Carlo Reid assures privacy of this information:

PlurkYM saves your password in encrypted format that isn’t readable by an ordinary human being. It’s transmitted to plurk.com in an encrypted format too. I am committed to provide maximum security on personal information that PlurkYM collects. Please be assured that all information gathered by the PlurkYM bot are safe, secured and will never be shared with anyone. If you feel that your information has been compromised, please unregister with the service immediately and report the problem to me.

There are actually other sites that ask for your username and password to use Twitter and Plurk, such ping.fm and many third-party Facebook applications.

How to Setup PlurkYM

  • Add PlurkYM as a new contact in Yahoo Messenger.

Coolness! I really wanted something like this. I use both services, but I prefer not to have to go from one tab to another (I use Yahoo! Web Messenger). This is really great! :)

You guys can also still use Google Talk for Plurk updates and use a third party application for IM’s such as Pidgin.im or Digsby which supports most instant messaging services. It prevents cluttering of IM’s. However, Pidgin does not support webcam but I believe Digsby does. I haven’t tried using the ping.fm bot to check for updates using YM yet.

I saw lot of Entrecarders joining Twitter and Facebook – probably because there are some paid opportunities that are now available in Twitter and Facebook such as that offered in SS.

Ping.fm is worth trying out, there’s also a bot that you can use on YM and Gmail. I had been using it for a while.

Great to see you here. It is true, it can be difficult to trust some websites. Even some those third-party apps in Facebook and Twitter also lures some people into giving out their usernames and passwords, then we would learn that these apps are trying to trick users.

Nako ate, I don’t think maganda ung idea na yan… ung pag cross-posting ng plurk updates sa twitter. Ewan ko for me ah, i don’t think its good kasi its so redundant and useless. Especially dun sa mga nagpluplurk ng nonsense .. nakakairita. Well, marami narin ako nakikita sa twitter na nagrereklamo about jan, na baket pa kelangan x-post from plurk. Anyways, its just my opinion.

One thing in common sa opinion natin, yung nagpu-plurk ng nonsense. One good thing, natututo na ang mga nagpu-plurk ng nonsense, mabilis ang pickup nila that they have to be creative sa plurks nila. Magkaiba ang mga Twitter audience ko sa Plurk audience ko, at may mga plurks ako na di ko pinapalitaw sa Twitter kaya siguro effective naman. :-p

I’ve updated the post above. PlurkYM isn’t working anymore, as Plurk itself had enabled the service from their own site – so we don’t need to rely on third party services such as this.
