Receiving My Payoneer Card

14 February 2008

LAST UPDATED: October 24, 2009

oDesk-issued Payoneer cards are still shipped out free. The activation fee comes in when the card is first loaded. Please visit Payoneer to see their latest card charges and fees.

I learned about oDesk around October 2007. I had signed up with this freelance site but I had not decided to bid on jobs right away. I was too busy working at a full time job which required me to spend lots of overtime work. However, I decided to apply for an oDesk Mastercard after I had signed up. After more than a month, the oDesk Mastercard came in through snail mail – FREE!

For a while I was impressed at the sleek black look of this card. I think this card beats the appearance and quality of most ATM/debit cards that issued locally in the Philippines.

The oDesk Mastercard comes with some documents contained instructions and fees that helped me activate the card online. I’ve learned that the oDesk Mastercard is simply one of the payout methods that oDesk uses to pay its freelancers. This card is powered by Payoneer, which also offers payouts solutions to some sites like Elance, ReviewMe, iStockPhoto, MetaCafe and other online sites that opt to remit payments through this payment method. Some of sites offer Payoneer card to only paid members, such as those providers working for Elance; while others give out the card for without requiring paid membership upgrade – just like what I had experienced in oDesk.

Think of Payoneer simply as another payment method available to receive online earnings – an alternative to Paypal payouts, if an online site offers this alternative payment method.

You can learn more about Payoneer through their FAQ page. It provides answers to those questions on how to activate the card, how to get funds loaded, how to manage the account and how to use the card.

The Freelance Life

13 February 2008

What is the life of a freelancer?

Since I have decided to find a way to earn income without getting employed, I was able to enjoy the flexibility of not having a fixed work schedule.

I really like having to wake up in the late morning and sleep beyond the midnight hour. I also have the luxury to snooze in the middle of the day, if there are no projects to do.

I like not having a boss around to follow orders. I love not being able to type in reports at work.

Isn’t it great to have a life that you can truly call your own?

But this same freelance life can be as well difficult.

If there is no work, there is no income. Not having a project to work on for days or weeks at a time can be quite frustrating, because this means you get no money in return.

life of a freelancerSecuring a job can be difficult, at least for the new players in freelancing. You have to establish a reputation first.

As a freelance, having the skills are not simply enough to do the work. One must learn entrepreneurial skills to make an edge to the job.

And also learn to manage finances. Freelance jobs are not fixed guaranteed jobs in the first place.

Going freelance is a good option to have – it is actually well appreciated by many corporate employees who wish to shift to this kind of job. But consider the advantages and disadvantages of embarking on this career before you make the final shift.

Hello World!

12 February 2008

UPDATE: Added a music video at the end of this post. Enjoy!

There is always something universal about “Hello World”.

For a programmer, it has always started the beginning of learning.

It has since been used to illustrate the beauty of programming.

It has also been used to understand a new programming language.

Or to simply put a test program, or a test post, or a test site.

It is indeed, here to stay!
