Microsoft’s Project Natal: Control the Game with Your Body
Jun 3, 2009
I think Microsoft’s Project Natal is another milestone in home gaming entertainment. If you have not heard of this buzz that had been going for months, Project Natal does not require any controller to be hooked up to an Xbox 360!
Microsoft seemed to introduce this stuff not only to kids but to all family members. I see that gadget as an all-around entertainment console that’s great for the entire family. There isn’t any release date yet, but Microsoft said that it will be offered soon.
This cool teaser video says it all:
I guess the physical activity demanded by this new console would help people get on their feet and be active.

Hopefully this won’t cost an arm and a leg to get! Looking at how much Xbox360 peripherals are priced, this one is going to be uber-expensive!

Wow a contender to nintendo’s wii, i think this one is another tactic of microsoft, how come they developed this technology that fast???? And this would be another extension to XNA programming… weeewww

WhatsaCoder, I wouldn’t call this a contender to Nintendo’s Wii. They have some similarities, but the Xbox Game Trak peripheral is more like the contender to Nintendo’s Wii. This has much more broad potential. Rather than wave a wand, you can control the game with your entire body. If I just want to pick a movie from my library (which one of the demo movies suggests you can do), do I want to dig in the couch for a remote (or wiimote) or would I rather just wave my hand at the screen? Okay, that example makes me sound like a lazy bum, but the point is it’s bits and bolts you don’t need to worry about.
In fact, there even seems to be some concern that this technology could be -too- immersive. Cinema Blend, for example, was quoted by Newsy as saying the new technology “… has done something that is just plain scary: crossing the bridge between interactivity, real-life and everything that was once sacred.†You don’t hear that about the Wii.

I wonder how they’re handling discerning 3 dimensional motion. Obviously they’ve solved that problem. It would be very interesting to see what sort of technology is involved there.

Nothing wrong with that! I can’t wait for Microsoft to finally release this. Hopefully it isn’t vaporware.
