What is Ethical Hacking?

May 10, 2009

Did you ever know that learning hacking can eventually lead to a progressive career in IT?
When I was still doing some IT teaching jobs, I’ve always run into a student who has great interest in computer hacking. He would show me several tricks on how to exploit systems. Several years later, I was assigned briefly to teach ethical hacking in a military school. That was when I learned that hacking can indeed be a lucrative career.

The media probably led us to believe the negative effects of hacking. Almost everyone would agree with me that hacking is the evil side of using computers. Successful hackers in their teenage years are often sensationalized by the media – it’s either that they get to prison or they get hired on the good side. Eventually, this created careers made solely for ethical hackers: individuals hired by huge companies and businesses who are working against those black hat hackers who write malicious scripts.

Ethical hacking is a growing career in Information Technology particularly in the IT Security field. The EC-Council site even offers this course as online classes – for those who cannot attend to the usual regular classes for any reason. This course covers the following topics: Security Fundamentals, Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing, Computer Forensics, Disaster Recovery and Secure Programming.

A professional ethical hacker makes sure that he knows how to deal with the vulnerabilities of the company’s computer network.

Hacking has many different levels. Some hack for further development of an application or software and some hack just to exploit which contradicts the ethics of hacking. Here’s a good resource for developers/hackers news.ycombinator.com

This is the first time I’ve heard of ethical hacking. It makes perfect sense. With almost all sensitive data and processes done through computers and online, companies really need the help of these ‘defensive hackers’ against the bad guys.

And it’s a cool job, too! Imagine being a professional hacker.:)

I’ve taken Ethical Hacking 3 years ago and like what you’ve said, it does have its benefits. But some people have a different understanding of hacking in general. There’s actually a cracker and a hacker and they are different. Believe it or not, even we developers have this thing regarding code security. Making sure that our compiled code doesn’t compromise any injections or malicious codes.

I just received a course schedule for ethical hacking to be conducted in MISNet, Makati on May 18-22,2009. Looks like hacking is starting to have a good impression here. Applied to a professional level can benefit companies without blacklisting the developer.

True I also got a copy of the video (sadly, I did not keep a copy of that CD after I left that job) that explained the difference between a hacker and a cracker. Those guys in the video who were hackers and crackers explained the difference.

Wow! Good thing there’s a training for this course offered locally. Big multinational companies will surely benefit – they get to hire people who skilled in hacking.

So ethical hackers are those “recovering” hackers? Those fascinating young turks who turned over a new leaf? It’s a strange world, hacking and its community. If I can’t wrap my little brain around this fascinating netherworld, I can surely tweet about it. Ahehehe.
