Paypal to Smart Money: It’s Possible!
To those Filipinos who are taking out cash from Paypal to any Philippine bank account, I hope you find this tip useful. I’ve actually been saving a lot from doing Paypal to Smart Money transfer. The only amount I have to pay is at least P2.50.

In case you are not aware of Smart Money, it is the blue ATM card that Smart Buddy subscribers can avail. Getting cash this way is secured: even if I get to lose either the cellphone or if the Smart Money card gets lost, a PIN is required first before those funds are accessed. Separate PIN numbers are issued for the cellphone and the Smart Money card.
Let me explain how I am able to save this way. Let’s say I have a P10,000 amount to be withdrawn from Paypal. I choose “withdraw to bank account” option and decided to withdraw that amount from my Unionbank EON bank account. As I have illustrated in a previous post, there’s no charge when “withdraw to bank account” option is selected. I need to wait for about three business days before the entire amount gets into my Unionbank EON account without any deduction: meaning, I get the entire P10,000 entered into my Unionbank EON bank account.
This is where I use my mobile phone to take out Unionbank EON bank earnings to Smart Money. That transfer will only cost me P2.50 which is actually taken out from the airtime (i.e. P2.50 is charged from the cellphone load, not from the P10,000 amount). Then I simply go to any BDO ATMs to get the funds out: unless the ATM sets a lower withdrawal limit per transaction, I would get a full P10,000 amount without any additional charges (Smart Money withdrawals are free at any BDO ATM).
If I had withdrawn funds from Paypal at less than P7,000 then I would have spent a total of only P52.50.
I don’t think this one is possible with Globe G-cash, but I think it would be better for Globe to make their G-cash services accessible through an ATM card.

Hi Gem!
This is the best news I have heard so far! Thanks for the detailed explanation on how much I can save if I use Smart Money to withdraw my PayPal fund.
I especially like the part where the P2.50 will just be deducted from your airtime load. I love Smart just for that.

After what happened to my Eon Cyber Account, I started to look for other cheap and easy way to get my Paypal money. So last Friday I went to Smart center in our place and inquired about the possibility of connecting Paypal with Smart Money (I know that it is possible but I need to be sure about the steps). The pretty clerk (or whatever she was) who talked to me obviously didn’t have any idea as to what Paypal is all about; it was obvious in her facial expression that she thought that I was talking about some sort of scam when I asked her about ways of connecting Paypal with Smart money. I explained Paypal to her but she didn’t seem to get it. What a waste, such a pretty face! So I told her that i’ll figure it out myself anyway. I went home and applied online for Smart Money. I bought a new SIM card for it. I will have my Smart Money card in two to three weeks.
Now based on your article Gem, it is still not possible to get Paypal money directly to Smart Money because we need it to go through Eon first then from Eon we transfer it to Smart money.
One question Gem, how do you transfer Eon money to Smart Money?

I remember it was from your previous post also Gem that I learned you can withdraw money from paypal through unionbank account, so, since then, I had been sending money to my father through paypal since it is cheaper for me that way. I will forward your post to my brother who has the paypal account.

Great post Gem. Though I’m really lost as to how you can save using Smart Money. You can always withdraw using the EON card. But anyays, what I usually do is have the funds in PayPal reach $250-$300 so I don’t have to pay for any withdrawal fees.

Well written article that covers the topic. This is interesting and brings up some questions and answers others. Doesn’t PayPal remit directly to your bank account anyway? Keep up the good work. Be well.
Gem
February 7th, 2009 at 3:30 pm #
Yes, they remit to my bank account directly, but the problem with Unionbank (which is the most preferred bank for Paypal withdrawals) is that they only have few ATMs around. So I am giving Smart Money as an alternative because there are more ATMs around town.
Gem
February 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm #
There’s always that P10-P12 withdrawal fee each time you withdraw from Unionbank. Some Unionbank ATMs don’t allow you to withdraw more than their minimum balance, especially if you want to reach that $250 to $300 limit. Plus, you don’t get that ATM offline problem of some Unionbank ATMs. Over time I’ve noticed that BDO ATMs are more reliable than those ones from Unionbank.
Plus, I can do balance inquiry over the mobile phone, something that Unionbank fails at their online site. This also helps me avoid the long queue at the Unionbank branches.
I can’t wait for the funds to reach $250 to $300. I’m a full time freelancer who needs funds.

You mean EON card na cyber account, not actually bank account? May eon card din kasi ako, at withdraw to card ang ginagamit ko. Yung eon din kasi ang ginamit ko para maverify sa paypal.
Ask ko lang, pag hiningi yung bank account, yung card number din ng eon ang binibigay?

“Withdraw to card” option by Paypal costs you more and takes a longer time to get into the account. Use “withdraw to bank” option. I made a previous post about it: Which Option for Withdrawing Funds from Paypal Should I Use?
Yung bank account I think nakalagay din sa card, just beside the card’s expiry date – yun ang gagamitin para mag-add ng bank account.

If you have chosen “withdraw to bank” option rather than “withdraw to card”, you should not have that $5 fee. “Withdraw to bank” is faster and cheaper: I had elaborated it in this previous post: Which Option for Withdrawing Funds from Paypal Should I Use?

Hi Ate Gemz! share ko lang. i just got my PP account verified today! through my Eon account yan. Walang hassle except long pending time. hahay. Iaadd ko na lang UBP bank account ko.
I’m going to enroll din for mobile banking with Smart money.
Questions lang po.
is it ok to add my bank account to my pp account today? or i have to wait pa?
then after, i have to wait AGAIN before making transactions? like transfer my pp funds to my Eon account.
lastly,
what is the UBP bank name??(as in Union bank of the Phil ba yun?) sounds stupid to ask pero want to make sure lang.XP
and the Bank code?- yan yung when adding bank account sa PP.
ay, regarding smart money pala. may enroll through internet po ba? via my internet banking/Eon account.
guys and gals, if you at least know Ate Gemz, daig niya costumer service. LOL.
For those who are just starting to GET IN THE HIPE of PAYPAL and EON CYBER ACCOUNTS… use your Internet access! Read this blog! Read alot from PAYPAL’s and UBP’s website. Do the GOOGLE!
thanks Ate Gemz,

Hi Gem! I saw you in oDesk and found your posts to be very helpful. Unionbank sucks, more than a month ago na ako nag-aapply sa kanila hindi ko alam bakit ang pangit ng services nila. Buti na lang nag-apply rin ako for Payoneer card, which arrived 2 weeks after. Through your posts I was able to verify my Paypal. I still need my Unionbank to transfer money the cheapest way possible, but it’s a relief I have other option pa rin. Anyways, just wanna say THANKS!

Me too, I am not really to give up my Payoneer card – although there are lots of fees involved, their customer service is waaaayyy better than any of our local banks. I get my funds out of oDesk out fast too.
It’s a good thing that you still have Paypal. If you are also earning $$$ from other sites, you will realize that this is a very common payout method (than Payoneer).

Hi, I’m an Odesk provider and an ex-Smart employee too. I just want to inform you that you can directly transfer your funds from Paypal to SmartMoney. I have tried it once and it worked though I’ve been deducted P200. I’m just not sure if its the annual fee deducted by Banco de Oro (SmartMoney’s servicing bank)or BDO’s charge for international deposits. But the crediting of the funds will took longer than 3-4 days, usually on the 7th day, then you can withdraw the amount to any Expressnet member banks.
I also enrolled my smart money under mobile banking with my Metrobank account so that in times when expressnet member machines are not available or goes offline, I can transfer it to my Metrobank acct so I can withdraw the amount to any ATM machines accepting Mastercard.
Transferring a fund from Paypal to Metrobank account takes 4 days before it becomes available. So if its true that transferring your fund from Paypal to Unionbank Eon account takes only 3 days, well that’s the fastest for local banks so far.

Thanks for sharing – an interesting one! If Smart Money really deducts P200 from Paypal funds and also takes 3 to 4 or as you had said, on the 7th day, then I would still prefer to go the old way: Paypal to Unionbank, then Unionbank to Smart Money, which only costs me P52.50, as I had pointed out on my post above.
However, I am happy that the local banks and institutions are trying to provide more options of withdrawing funds to Paypal, as my way of taking out funds doesn’t really work for everyone – usually due to poor customer support.

Yes, its true, it is still more practical to do your suggestion. I only inform readers that it’s possible to transfer the fund directly to SmartMoney =)

Is it too much to ask. I am sure No, You will be kind enough to answer and oblige.

Hi Gem,
I am reposting my comment on one of your blogs here. Seems to me a lot of freelancers are at still having problems on withdrawing money from odesk. I hope this helps as I also encountered the same hassles as before and sana di naman mahirapan yung iba dito kagaya ko:
I’m working with odesk too and I have always transferred my funds to my paypal which I the withdraw through my Union Bank Eon.
======================================================================
Withdrawing through Union Bank actually takes only 2 banking days. The best way to do it is to withdraw…always..and I mean always to your bank account NOT to your card number.
An Eon account is both a debit card and a savings account. If someone needs their money fast, they should link their Union Bank Eon SAVING ACCOUNT (it’s written on the card, just above the name…do not use the card number) to their paypal for withdrawal purposes.
Here’s a tip, always check your Eon account at between 7-8:30PM on the 2nd banking day meaning: if you withdrew funds to your Union Savings Account say on a monday….check your account (via online is best or you can check through atm) on Wednesday night. So far, 100% of the time, in my experience, the funds are there.

I think you have those problem because your Paypal is not verified yet. You need to verify that. I hope you had visited this page: Getting Paid and check out the links that asks you to verify your account.
Once that you account is verified, you can go ahead and withdraw funds to your bank account.
FYI: Smart Money is optional – it just lets you save on fees!

You may choose any bank though I suggest opening an account at major banks. But if you want the lowest opening account amount, try RCBC. In my case, I opened an account at BPI.
I used SmartMoney to verify my Paypal account and then I added my BPI account to my paypal so that it would be the bank where I can withdraw my funds to locally. As a bonus, I linked my SmartMoney and my BPI so that I can reload my SmartMoney using BPI thru my Smart and thus withdraw using my SmartMoney card.

Hello Gem!
I got this problem! I accidentally sent my paypal funds to my friend’s Smart money card. I clicked on “withdraw to bank account” and typed in the card number of the Smart money account. Here’s the thing, after three days, the transaction was completed. I checked the Smart Money card and the money wasn’t there. Is it possible that the money is wired to a BDO account since it put BDO and it’s bank code in the process of withdrawing the funds.
Another thing, do you think that it will go through? Is it also possible to have the same BDO account number and Smart money card number?
Please help me asap!
I am really starting to worry here..
Thanks!

“withdraw to bank account” always withdraws money linked to your OWN bank account that is linked in Paypal, not to your friend’s. You can only send Paypal funds to another friend who also owns a Paypal account ONLY by typing the Paypal email address.
I think all the money you want to send to your friend went into your bank account (that’s linked to Paypal) instead. Go check your bank account within three to seven days after the transaction is completed in Paypal – the funds might have ended there.
