Yahoo Geocities Now a Thing of the Past

Apr 25, 2009

Are you familiar with Yahoo’s Geocities? I had once tried out their site when I was still out from college and still learning HTML basics in one of the computer schools around the city. Yahoo’s Geocities was one of the first websites that I’ve tried out. I tried making some personal web pages that are hand-coded in HTML and uploaded these on the site. During that time, free web servers have one catch: they always run advertisements on the site.

The reason I discontinued using Geocities is that they had that awful pop-up when I load my page. I remember seeing a Geocities sidebar which consumed space on my 800×600 computer screen. I found better web hosts without any pop-ups and had minimal advertisements.

Over time, it is now common to see a number of web hosts offered free without any advertisements. Most web hosts offer more than the FTP functionality: there are now scripts that can be run to host a blog, an e-commerce website, or even a simple website built with a site builder.

I never looked back at Yahoo Geocities after learning all the other webservices. Now, I learned that Yahoo is now slowly making the move to bury this city into its resting place. If you are still a Yahoo Geocities user, then read this help center posting. The primary reason why Yahoo is giving up on this service is because social network sites like Facebook and MySpace are favored by users.

Have you ever used Yahoo Geocities?

I remember using it for a school project. It’s more of a requirement to upload on geocities actually. But I haven’t ac actually used it. My first WordPress site was hosted by Scott Fleming in 2003.
There are some hosting companies (free service) who offered FTP, SSH access and more. Some friends were using the service. I forgot the link but it’s for ASP and PHP websites.

I remembered when I was referred by some of my classmates before to visit their geocities page and I find these pages unattractive because of yes, pop ups and heavy ads in it.

It is better now that we have other options to check out aside from geocities. I even saw one that goes as simple as dragging and pasting stuff to build a site. Let’s see if yahoo will come out with a better idea. :)

Back in 1999, I created my first personal site sa GeoCities. Naglagay lang ako ng pictures ng mga classmates ko din. After a year, nakalimutan ko na yung password ko dun so hindi ko rin talaga na-maintain.

It’s really sad that something like GeoCities, which is a pioneer on the Internet, has stopped existing.

I remember using Geocities for my first ever webpage on Sagada way back in 1997. I thought it was pretty cool back then. My friend and I tried to outdo each other in trying to make the banner ad as part of the webpage as much as we could. We hated it, hahaha.

I only tried Yahoo Geocities once, It was Personal Page that created using swish… I think it is still up I just forgot the URL :D

I always use freewebs back then, primarily because of the ads geocities put on the right side of the page. it’s really an eye sore so i never did go back in using geocities.

Ha… I had hosted my first STATIC personal homepage at Geocities many years ago (at least 10 years ago!). Sad to hear it is time for it to retire now :)
